Walk: Shrewsbury Canal

Saturday 30 May 2015 — start 10 a.m.

OS Landrangers 126, Explorer 241, (Old) Pathfinder 869

Canal website: http://cms.snct.co.uk/

Meeting point: 10.00am at The Corbet Arms, Uffington , SY4 4SN (tel 01743 709232)

This pub is north-east of Shrewsbury off the B5062 OS ref SJ528137

This pub will be the ‘base’ for our day’s walk: it’s 3¼ miles east of our start point in the centre of Shrewsbury and 4¼ miles west of the end of the walk in Upton Magna (SJ554125) so there will be a car shuffle at both ends. The pub has adequate parking and an excellent bill of fare.

There’s plenty of interest along our route, kindly arranged by members of The Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust, notably its Chairman Bernie Jones. We shall see work that’s been done, work planned, obstacles to overcome, restrictions, land ownership considerations etc etc — all the usual restoration issues. A veritable IWPS/BBHT walk scenario! We shall even walk alongside Shrewsbury’s Flaxmill Maltings, the world’s first iron-framed building, currently undergoing its own major restoration.

There’s an excellent farm shop and tea room at Upton Magna, prepared to stay open a little later than usual in order to provide refreshments for us.

If you plan to come, please ring Kathy & Paul Niblett on 01782 641967 (answerphone available) anytime during the week before the 30 May.

An indication of your desire to lunch or not at the pub would also be useful. The pub would appreciate knowing the selections as early as possible, ideally on Thursday 28th, so if you want to purchase food, please give us your choices. The menu can be found at:

Please let us know if you expect to travel by rail to Shrewsbury. The walk starts very close to the station and so we can plan to meet you there.

Stout shoes etc as usual: some of the walk is on country roads, some on good towing path, some not so good — the usual!
