Derby Canal

Saturday 1st April 2017 — 10.00 a.m

This walk is from Spondon to Sandiacre but the precise start and finish points are still to be established. The purpose of this email is just to confirm that despite the date selected for the walk i.e.1st April Mark & Ruth do indeed intend to guide those people Foolish enough to turn up, from somewhere on or close to the former line of the Derby Canal to somewhere else on or close to the former line of the Derby Canal and that the distance between start and finish points will be some 6.5 miles.

When we have finally established the precise start and finish points for the walk we will circulate them.

At present the only one fixed point in this journey is the lunch time pub which will be the Navigation Inn, Breaston. The distance from Spondon to the Navigation Inn is 4.5 miles and the distance from the Navigation Inn to Sandiacre (where the Derby Canal joined the Erewash Canal) is 2 miles. So unfortunately a good 2/3 of the walking has to be done in the morning and we must be at the pub by 1.30 for those who wish to eat there, so a prompt start will be essential.

For those who consider a morning 4.5 miler might be more than sufficient exercise we can arrange for their vehicles to be left in the pub car park but would appreciate prior notice that you wish to take this option.

Warning: The walking surface is extremely variable from long stretches on tarmac / concrete, to stretches which are extremely muddy so stout footwear / wellies are strongly recommended.

Navigation Inn, Breaston, “probably the best real ale pub in Breaston” according to their website so you would have thought it would be an ideal venue for the reunion of any of the surviving members of "Real Ale Action Group" On the debit side, the website only displays the Christmas Menu and on further examination this turned out to be for the year 2014!. However, we have boldly gone and eaten and partaken of liquid refreshment at the pub and thought the experience was most agreeable. The pub has kindly agreed to set aside a room for us that will take a maximum of 24 pub lunchers on the proviso that we give them a week's notice of walker's menus choices.

Please find attached photographic reproductions of the menu, could you please let us know by Friday March 24 if you will be joining us, with your menu choice (please note under the heading 'Meat' at the top of the second page of the menu is information concerning choices which apply to most 'main meals' please ensure you include your choices), email: ruthandmark123@btinternet.com or phone: 0114 2661353, if there are any last minute panics on the day then we should be contactable on our mobiles Mark: 07971 509836 and Ruth: 07804 217597.

In the unlikely event we are asked to lead a walk next year we will endeavour to arrange that responses can find us at the more appropriate address: #disorganisedwalksrus
